An article in Stuff this past weekend, highlighting the issue of meth contamination in rental properties and the proposed ‘seven days notice’ law allowing landlords to take immediate action if their tenants break the law, certainly got people’s heckles up on both sides of the rental equation. There were literally hundreds of posts and comments – the vast majority in support of a landlord’s right to protect their properties.
At Ray White Damerell Group we take the subject of meth contamination in our rental properties extremely seriously. We were early adopters in strongly recommending that all our landlords test their properties, and published an extensive article on the subject back in October 2016. This article is still accurate and relevant, and we would recommend all our landlords and tenants read it.
As the old saying goes, ‘prevention is better than cure’, and there’s no better deterrent than to have an open policy of testing all properties at the beginning and end of all tenancies. This protects landlords and tenants, alike.
Currently, testing for methamphetamine is voluntary, and is at the discretion of the individual landlord. Our recommendation at Ray White Damerell Group is to have every property tested – that way, there is peace of mind for everyone concerned.
