Auckland’s Next Great Real Estate Salesperson

By Ali Frederickson

How can you become Auckland’s next great real estate salesperson?

Real estate is a lucrative business in Auckland. With consistently high buyer demand and prices on the rise, many people are seeking investment properties Auckland-wide. Therefore, a career as a real estate salesperson offers a stable and promising future. But what does it take to become one?

If you’re ready to be the next great real estate salesperson on Auckland’s North Shore, read on to see what it takes.

What is it like to work in real estate?

Life as a real estate salesperson is a dynamic and exciting experience, one that gets you out of the office and in front of many interesting people. It will be your job to help clients sell their properties by determining the property’s value and finding the ideal buyer through quality marketing, open homes, and consultations.

The job will test your communication and sales techniques, as well as your understanding of the local property market and property law. Real estate agents and salespeople compete in an exciting and lucrative housing market, so long or irregular hours outside the office are sometimes necessary to succeed. All in all, a career in real estate sales is a rewarding and highly lucrative one for those willing to put in the time to earn their licence and work hard.

What are the requirements to become a real estate salesperson in Auckland?

The New Zealand Real Estate Authority provides four core requirements for becoming a real estate salesperson:

  • You must be at least 18 years old,
  • be able to demonstrate honest character,
  • be “a fit and proper person” (i.e. Devoid of any unsavoury court judgements or pending criminal charges),
  • and possess the requisite qualifications and work experience.

The cancellation of a previous real estate licence will prevent you from obtaining a new licence, as would being a conveyancer or lawyer.

To complete these requirements, you will need to apply for a criminal history check with the New Zealand Police Vetting Service. A conviction of any crime involving dishonesty will render you ineligible to receive a real estate license, as would a conviction of offences listed within the Fair Trading Act 1986.

Real estate licensing courses & exams

To become a real estate salesperson, you will need to obtain either a New Zealand Certificate in Real Estate (Level 4) or a National Certificate in Real Estate (Level 4), both of which can be obtained with the help of a handful of tertiary organisations.

Becoming a real estate salesperson is the first step towards becoming a branch manager, and ultimately, an agent. You’ll need your New Zealand real estate licence to get started on this journey, which will require an up-front investment of time, effort, and money, but persistence pays off.
