The New Zealand Real Estate Authority provides four core requirements for becoming a real estate salesperson:
The cancellation of a previous real estate licence will prevent you from obtaining a new licence, as would being a conveyancer or lawyer.
To complete these requirements, you will need to apply for a criminal history check with the New Zealand Police Vetting Service. A conviction of any crime involving dishonesty will render you ineligible to receive a real estate license, as would a conviction of offences listed within the Fair Trading Act 1986.
To become a real estate salesperson, you will need to obtain either a New Zealand Certificate in Real Estate (Level 4) or a National Certificate in Real Estate (Level 4), both of which can be obtained with the help of a handful of tertiary organisations.
Becoming a real estate salesperson is the first step towards becoming a branch manager, and ultimately, an agent. You’ll need your New Zealand real estate licence to get started on this journey, which will require an up-front investment of time, effort, and money, but persistence pays off.
